Changing a Life...
This year the Brownstein Fellowship program celebrates our eleventh year of sending students on Gap Year experiences. Throughout the academic year 2019-202, FOUR! more young people are exploring the world and themselves by undertaking a Gap Year in honor and memory of Michael Brownstein.
Tosh L., Asher V., Xenia B and Anja C. are Harvard-Westlake graduates whose grants come from the Michael Brownstein Endowed Fund at Harvard-Westlake School.
We are thrilled that with your support, there are now 30 Brownstein Fellows – 23 from Harvard-Westlake and seven who have come from different public schools in Los Angeles through our partnerships with the Fulfillment Fund and Bright Star Schools.
All Brownstein Fellows gain exposure to other cultures through participation in international community service projects. They change lives by giving their time and talent to others in need, and in return find their own lives changed. We are immensely proud of their work and can't wait to share with you their journeys.
The Michael Brownstein Endowed Fund was established at Harvard-Westlake School in 2007. The endowment launched with over $273,000 contributed by 338 donors. Many classmates, family and friends continue to designate their annual support of Harvard-Westlake to the endowed fund in Michael’s name – some 700 gifts have been received to date. We are grateful for the growth and stability of the fund and believe that it will generate sufficient income to send one or more young alumni of Harvard-Westlake on a Brownstein Fellowship Gap Year experience in perpetuity. Our first award from this fund was made in 2008.
The Michael Brownstein Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization whose motto is Change a Life. It was established with initial gifts totaling $110,000. In 2012, we realized our dream of offering Gap Year grants to those from less privileged backgrounds by partnering with the Fulfillment Fund and awarding the first Brownstein Fellowship award from the Michael Brownstein “Change a Life” Foundation to a student who applied through the Fulfillment Fund.
Eager to see our vision in action, in 2012 we awarded the first Gap Year grant to a student selected through our then-new partnership with the Fulfillment Fund. In addition to funding fellowships, the Foundation also underwrites related costs such as hosting events open to Brownstein Fellows and their families. All Brownstein Fellows come home feeling that they are citizens of the world. We are committed to providing them with opportunities to share experiences and foster lifelong connections.
We have seen some very talented individuals push beyond their comfort zones to explore the world, help humanity and grow exponentially as global citizens. With your continued support, we are confident that we can continue to support positive change in the lives of young men and women who take a year between high school and college to explore the world and voluntarily assist others who can benefit from their help.
On behalf of the Fellowship Committee, the Brownstein family, and all of our Fellows – past, present and future - we thank you for following us on this journey and supporting our vision. Contributions to the Michael Brownstein Foundation are tax deductible. We hope you take joy in knowing that your gift underwrites experiences in human understanding that will be multiplied many times over, and we encourage your continued and generous support.
Sincerely,
Scott Messer, President Anna Nesser, Vice-President
