Christopher M. 2017 Fellow
Christopher plans to begin his gap year experience in Madrid, Spain where he will be teaching two kids, ages 8 and 10, English and sports skills and staying with a host family thanks to workaway.info (a great site for finding live/work arrangements).
After this, Christopher will travel to Madrid, Spain and teach English with the program volunteerhq.org. There, he will teach students after school and local communities English, while also playing and coaching soccer after their lessons.
Nearby, Christopher will volunteer at a hospitality internship in Portugal. This program encourages volunteers to cook for themselves and going out into the vibrant city of Portugal. Not only will he have time to learn valuable cooking skills in Portugal, but he will also learn about management administration and tourism hospitality.
Although Christopher originally planned to go to Costa Rica to save and preserve turtle wildlife in November, he is revising his trip a bit to stay in Europe and head north, either to the UK or to Ireland.
For his second half, Christopher is debating between Australia or Central America. His original plan included preserving wildlife in Australia, preserving the Amazon Ecuadorian rainforest, helping out orphans in Peru, and ultimately completing a cooking internship in Guatemala. Although all of these programs and internships sound like an amazing experience, he is taking the liberty of a Gap Year to reconsider what would truly inspire and challenge him.
